The first ever all-German Champions League Final pits 2011 and 2012 German Champions Borussia Dortmund against 2013 Bundesliga Champions Bayern München. Will Bayern be third-time lucky in their third Champions League Final in four years, or will Borussia Dortmund win their first European Cup since 1997?

We will be watching the game recorded from German TV earlier in the day with German commentary.

This should be a great show, with many of Germany's national team players taking part: Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer, Ilkay Gündogan, Kevin Großkreutz, Marco Reus, Manuel Neuer, Jérome Boateng, Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller and Mario Gomez to name more than a few.

Play these games among other modern classics like Die Siedler von Catan, Auf Achse, Zug um Zug Märklin, Bohnanza, Scrabble, Thurn und Taxis and 6 Nimmt!  Linie 1 and ABC DRS 3 deutsch und deutlich, Die Speicherstadt und Filou: die Katze im Sack were also new additions for 2012 (and big hits with my English-speaking friends, I might add!). Whether you play games regularly or not, there is something for everybody!

Play a favourite, or try something new! A great way to socialize!

The 2013 German Cup Final will feature FC Bayern München in their quest to earn a domestic double (and maybe even a rare triple) playing against VfB Stuttgart, who look for their first German Cup victory since 1997.

Fussballfreunde February 27

Wednesday evening's Fussballfreunde will feature two German Cup games played today and Wednesday.

Wednesday's Bayern-Dortmund game will likely be the most significant game in German football for the season, as the winner will face much lesser competition in the semifinal, and possibly, the final. The Bundesliga looks to be decided already, with Bayern Munich having a 17-point cushion atop the table.

Hope you'll join us for the evening! I will begin with Tuesday's game (Offenbach-Wolfsburg) at 6 PM, the main feature of Bayern-Dortmund will get going around 8 PM.

2013 Victoria Film Festival

The Victoria Film Festival will feature Margarethe von Trotta's Hannah Arendt, a German production about the life of German American political theorist Hannah Arendt. (Trailer)

Advance ticket sales for the film are now closed, but the festival runs February 1-10.

If you are interested in seeing Hannah Arendt with other German speakers, you are welcome to join the small group I am organizing.

Please let me know if you wish to join us for dinner at the Rathskeller (Quadra at View) at 6:30 PM, or only for the film which begins at 9:15 PM at Empire Theatres downtown (805 Yates). I'm sorry that I do not have any extra tickets for the film available.

Deutschfreunde: Victoria Film Festival "Hannah Arendt" February 6

Dear German Speakers,

The Victoria Film Festival will open with a presentation of Margarethe von Trotta's Hannah Arendt, a German production about the life of German American political theorist Hannah Arendt. (Trailer)

The Bundesliga begins the Rückrunde with Bayern München at the top of the table, with last year's champions Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach (who just escaped relegation last summer) hot on their heels. Watch Borussia Mönchengladbach host Bayern München in a game recorded earlier in the day from German TV. Come to watch and talk German football!

Deutschfreunde für November u. Dezember: Fußballfreunde, Büchners "Woyzeck", German Games Night

Dear Victoria German speakers!

In November Fußballfreunde makes its comeback and German Games Night will make its return in December. On November 30, the University of Victoria's German and Theatre Departments combine to present, in German, Büchner's Woyzeck.

Flimmerkiste will be back in January with the documentary series Terra X - Unterwegs in der Weltgeschichte mit Hape Kerkeling and the comedy series Stromberg.

German will indeed be spoken, great for anyone who'd like to improve or keep up their German, or just to make new friends through the German language. German speakers of all levels are welcome!
